A hostage situation may have occurred in Montreal on Friday afternoon. This is what the regional media report.
“At the corner of Saint-Laurent and St-Viateur there is an ongoing police operation,” Montreal police wrote on Twitter. “We ask people to avoid the area. More details will follow. “
A video shared on Twitter shows armed police hiding behind a police vehicle on the blocked road. The “Journal de Montréal” reports that employees of game developer Ubisot seek protection on the roof of the company. Other companies also have their offices in the building.
An eyewitness reported to TVA Nouvelles: “We see about 50 people on the roof.” According to the broadcaster, some employees have barricaded themselves in conference rooms.
Police have now started evacuating the building, they say. A threat could not be identified. Whether it was really a hostage-taking has yet to be confirmed. (hac)
