Swiss magician Peter Marvey (49) remembers the late Roy Horn († 75) from Siegfried and Roy
I went to the Siegfried and Roy show three times before I finally met them. I have long been a great admirer of the two German magicians. In 2009 I was invited to Las Vegas. They had noticed a trick that he was going to use in his farewell show.
I spent ten days in the desert city and also visited the two world stars at their home called Little Bavaria. The property is huge, several large soccer fields. It has a large swimming pool where lions and tigers can also bathe. Three large villas are located in Little Bavaria, one for Siegfried, one for Roy, between the house where they met, including a chapel! In the middle of the desert, they planted a large forest where they sometimes went for a walk.
Siegfried and Roy lived like in a golden cage. They could not go among the people. Fans would have assaulted you immediately. They could not go shopping, nor could they fill their cars. They all made employees of them. However: despite fame and fortune, Roy was a very warm person with a great sense of humor. What impressed me about him was his fighting spirit. After his accident, he made progress for years that no one had believed in. I was always moved to see how he wanted to take a few steps without help and how he entertained us with his experiences and jokes, even though it was difficult for him to speak.
With Siegfried, Roy didn’t just change the art of illusion and Las Vegas. The two also became icons for a golden age of almost limitless freedom. In an era when everything was possible, he made everything possible. Roy showed us: dreams don’t have to remain dreams if we believe in ourselves and work hard to achieve it. I am infinitely grateful for this wisdom, which you, dear Roy, exemplified like no other.
