Primoz Roglic resists Richard Carapaz’s attack on the 17th stage of the Vuelta and faces the overall victory.
Primoz Roglic defended his leader’s red jersey on the 178-kilometer stretch from Sequeros to the Alto de la Covatilla ski resort. The Slovenian Jumbo Visma team saved 24 seconds of his lead over Richard Carapaz, who made another big attack on the final steep 11.4 kilometer climb. The Ecuadorian could only recover 21 seconds.
Roglic should win the Spanish national tour on Sunday for the second year in a row.
The winner of the penultimate day was David Gaudu. The Frenchman won his second stage in his first participation in the Vuelta.
Mäder with strong presence
Gino Mäder also shaped the stage: the Swiss team NTT finished second 28 seconds behind Gaudu. Until shortly before the end, the 23-year-old was part of an originally superior group of 32 people. However, Mäder had nothing else to counter Gaudu’s attack.
