The Cockpit Association offers Lufthansa more savings for pilots. But there is one condition.
For the first time in Lufthansa’s history, there is also short-term cabin work. However, according to the pilot union cab, more savings are needed. “The 50 percent reduction in short-term personnel costs agreed by the Cockpit Association at the end of March is not enough for the airline to go through a crisis of uncertain duration,” he wrote Tuesday (April 30).
Lufthansa, Lufthansa Cargo, Lufthansa Aviation Training and Germanwings pilots are ready to support further austerity measures. “In addition to an additional short-term reduction in short-term employment benefits, we have therefore offered the Group’s Board of Directors a significant reduction in salary costs by June 30, 2022,” says the president of Vereinigung Cockpit Markus Wahl. For the individual pilot, this means a salary up to 45 percent lower than in previous years.
“Jobs receive protection against dismissal”
The union calculated that the concessions would amount to a good 350 million euros. However, there is one condition: “The prerequisite for the offer is that the Group’s Board of Directors, in exchange for its employees, is committed and does everything possible to overcome the crisis together with them in a social association.” A protective shield procedure does not meet these requirements. “It is important to preserve jobs and agree on protection against dismissal,” says Wahl.
Accepting protection against dismissal will be difficult for Lufthansa, especially at Germanwings. She wants to close the daughter. Overall, the Lufthansa Group also plans to reduce its fleet by around 100 aircraft. According to Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr, this results in an excess of around 10,000 employees.
