This heart is hard. A helicopter plunged into a vortex over Keck Hospital in Boyle Heights on Friday during an organ transport in Los Angeles and crashed onto the landing pad on the roof. He stopped sideways at the edge; little would have been missing and he would have crashed from the multi-story building onto the street.
On board the helicopter: the urgently needed heart of a patient.
Use with special tools
The alarmed first responders had to open the wreckage of the helicopter with special tools to reach the donor’s heart. The three people on board escaped without serious injuries, according to the television station KTLA 5.
Rescuers managed to recover the organ from the accident and hand it over to a hospital employee. As a video from the accident scene shows, the doctor immediately turned around and wanted to rush back to the hospital. But then the medic tripped over the wreckage of the helicopter and dropped his heart.
“Amazing story”
The organ was apparently undamaged: the hospital announced, according to the Los Angeles Times, that the heart would be transplanted. “This is really an incredible story,” said hospital spokeswoman Meg Aldrich.
It is not yet known if the operation was successful.
Doctors at the hospital reported that they had felt a “slight and brief jolt” from the helicopter crash. Although debris apparently fell onto the street in the accident, no bystanders, patients or hospital employees were injured. There was also no significant damage to the building. (noo)
