  • The CDU won the local elections in North Rhine-Westphalia despite slight losses.
  • According to WDR projections, the party has more than 35 percent of the vote, the second strongest force will be the SPD.
  • Prime Minister Armin Laschet has thus received a tailwind for his candidacy for the national presidency of the CDU.

The electoral success of the CDU is a recognition of the “path of measure and center in the pandemic,” Laschet said. Many would not have expected a CDU victory “on this scale” in a country that had been ruled by the SPD for 50 years. The NRW prime minister had to receive much criticism for his course in the crown crisis.

According to an extrapolation for WDR as of 9:33 p.m., Christian Democrats get 35.7 percent of the vote statewide. They were 1.8 percentage points below their 2014 result. The second strongest force will therefore be the Social Democrats, who should finish off the Greens after significant losses.

Loss in the SPD, growth in the Greens

Based on extrapolation, the SPD lost 8.1 percentage points to only 23.3 percent, its worst result in a local NRW election. The Greens were able to increase their share of the vote by 6.4 percentage points to 18.1 percent. That would be your best result in a local NRW election.

By extrapolation, the AfD reached 5.4 percent, 2.8 percentage points more than in 2014. 5.5 percent of voters voted for the FDP, an increase of 0.8 points. At 3.5 percent, the left remained below the 2014 result. According to the WDR forecast, voter turnout of 51.5 percent was slightly higher than in 2014 (50 percent).

  • In addition to the municipal parliaments, mayors, mayors and district administrators were also elected in NRW.
  • In Cologne’s only megacity in North Rhine-Westphalia, Mayor Henriette Reker, supported by the CDU and the Greens, has to go to a second round, according to projections.
  • Runoff elections are also looming in the state capital, Düsseldorf and Dortmund. In both cities, SPD incumbents will likely have to face challenges from the CDU.
