After the second night of the riots, the St. Gallen city police reported to the city council on Saturday afternoon. Due to calls for violence last week, the police prepared accordingly. “Then the entire city police force was in action,” as explained at the press conference.
Emergency forces from across eastern Switzerland and the SBB transport police were called in to provide support. A helicopter from the Canton of Zurich police also flew over the city for reconnaissance purposes. Members of the St. Gallen Professional Fire Department and Rescue Team were also on duty. The street inspection of the municipal civil engineering office was busy cleaning streets and squares in the early hours of the morning.
After the night was quiet, the first discussions broke out shortly after 9 p.m. Anjan Sartory, director of operations for the city of St. Gallen police, says:
“What began peacefully in Red Square at 8 pm later degenerated into attacks on the police, who were present at the scene and seeking dialogue.”
The emergency services had been thrown with bottles, stones, pyrotechnics and even a Molotov cocktail.
More than 20 arrests and more than 30 evictions
In self-defense, the police used pellets and finally tear gas. The attacked forces were not injured. However, the city police are aware of at least two injured youths.
City police are still unable to estimate which groups and how many of the 1,000 people present were violent. Ralph Hurni, St. Gallen City Police Commander, says: “21 people were brought in. 16 of them are Swiss. Six live in the city of St. Gallen, 13 live in eastern Switzerland and two outside. “In addition, 33 people were expelled from the city. 28 people for 30 days, five people for 24 hours. A 25-year-old boy who had been written for his arrest he was arrested in the early hours of the morning.

Objects caught fire in Vadianstrasse. The fire brigade had to be escorted, says operations director Sartory. Manhole covers have been stolen elsewhere.
