70 firefighters battle Sunday night against the meter-high flames that light up the night sky in Ennetmoos NW. A listed wooden house catches fire before midnight. But despite the committed effort, the firefighters can no longer save the three-family home: the roof collapses, the living spaces are destroyed. Only the foundation walls and the first floor facade stick out of the fog on Sunday.
After all, hell doesn’t harm anyone. This is only thanks to the heroic efforts of a firefighter. He is one of the first rescuers on the scene to discover that a resident (85) on the first floor is still in the house. “He leaned a wooden frame against the wall and went in through a window,” says the father of the family (41), who lives in the same house and was able to arrive safely with his wife and young daughter (6 months). The firefighter slung the old woman over his shoulder and placed her safely on the wooden frame.
According to the Nidwalden canton police, the 85-year-old woman was still conscious when she was rescued. “But obviously you had to help her get out of the house,” spokesperson Dario Habermacher tells BLICK. They took her to the cantonal hospital with minor injuries. He suffered smoke inhalation.
The smoke alarm went off on the second floor.
It is not clear why the grandmother did not leave the house on time. “Maybe he couldn’t find his way out in the smoke,” speculates the father of the family. Before I could smell anything on the second floor, the smoke alarm went off. “When we saw the smoke from below, we quickly knew it was a bigger fire. So we left immediately ”, says the man. He couldn’t take the little ones’ wallets, papers or stuffed animals. “Now I’m looking in the rubble to see if I can find anything,” he told BLICK on Sunday. His family is fine, the first shock is over.
The house suffered property damage amounting to several 100,000 francs. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
