Novak Djokovic unintentionally meets a linesman at the US Open in frustration. The Serb is disqualified for this.
For Novak Djokovic, the US Open ended suddenly, and this for a very special reason: because he hits a linesman with a ball in frustration after missing a serve, he is disqualified.
Djokovic did not use 3 set balls when the score was 5: 4, 40: 0 against Spaniard Pablo Carreño Busta, then lost serve for the first time at 5: 6 and, frustrated by the lost service game, sent a ball to blinds backwards. With that, the world’s number one met a linesman.
It fell to the ground and gasped for air. Djokovic, visibly scared, rushed to help. But he also recovered quickly.
Already previously uncontrolled
The referees argued amongst themselves and with Djokovic for a while. But they had no choice but to disqualify the Serb. In all tennis tournaments in the world, players are immediately excluded for such infractions. At the highest level he has also met other top level players such as the Argentine David Nalbandian or the Canadian Denis Shapovalov.
Djokovic literally defied the scandal against Carreño Busta on Sunday. A few minutes earlier he was savagely hitting a tennis ball in the direction of a gang with officers seated nearby. This bullet didn’t hit anyone, he was still lucky. With the second offense, he pushed the ball back significantly less quickly, this time it was no longer good.
The clear favorite of the tournament is no longer there; Djokovic has not lost a match this year. It is also clear that a new winner of the Grand Slam tournament will be chosen at the US Open. All the previous big winners were either knocked out or not in the New York bubble.
