During a soccer game in Abtwil SG on Tuesday evening, 14 young people aged 15 and 16 were admitted to hospital after being struck by lightning. Rega took a young man to the hospital.
Lightning struck at 8.40pm during a match between FC Abtwil-Engelburg’s B-Juniors against FC Münsterlingen on a lighting pole, as Hanspeter Krüsi, spokesman for the St. Gallen cantonal police, said on Wednesday night.
After the impact, lightning slid to the ground and spread across the field. Several young people were affected by the flow of electricity. A 16-year-old soccer player who was unconscious was taken to the hospital with Rega. The remaining 13 adolescents were taken to the hospital to be monitored by paramedics after the consultation.
