The events of the weekend led to a dispute in the government of the state of Saxony. While the CDU defends the police action, the Greens and the SPD demand personal consequences.
The police arrived on Saturday night with a large contingent in the Connewitz district of Leipzig.
The Leipzig “side thinker” demonstration on Saturday and the riots in the Connewitz district the following night sparked a coalition crisis in the Saxon state government. The Greens, responsible for the environment and justice departments in the cabinet of Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU), demand consequences: the Saxon security organs “have lost all confidence”. Very few participants wore mouth and nose protection, so police interrupted the meeting for just under three hours. Due to the number of protesters, according to Wöller, “effective police control was impossible from the beginning”. Prime Minister Kretschmer announced that the government would now jointly examine to what extent the Saxon crown protection ordinance could be toughened to prevent “similar displays of carelessness and arrogance” in the future.
The SPD also departs from the Minister of the Interior
On Sunday night, the rioters had stoned the Connewitz police station. Windows were damaged, including those that were recently replaced after being damaged on the nights of the riots in early September. Subsequently, barricades were burned in several streets. The police arrived with a large contingent. Interior Minister Wöller spoke of a “senseless and repeated outbreak of violence” in Connewitz, which he harshly condemned. The crown demonstrations, by contrast, had a “predominantly peaceful course.” As “the largest crown party with more than 20,000 participants,” its approval was, however, irresponsible. He did not comment on reports that journalists had been attacked. The internal and legal committee of the state parliament will deal with the events in Leipzig.
The SPD, which also participates in the government, also opposes Wöller. Secretary General Henning Hohmann stated that “a demonstration of crown deniers in Saxony had once again become a lawless area. The interior minister is responsible for this. “The SPD demands consequences. The tripartite coalition formed in December 2019 holds 67 of the 119 seats in the Saxon state parliament.
