The scandal on the brink of the occupation of the Bundesplatz by climate activists has consequences for SVP National Councilor Andreas Glarner (57). The Swiss Cancer League breaks a planned advertising campaign with the Aargau politician.
Last week, Glarner called her colleague from the Basel national council Sibel Arslan (Green, 40) in front of the cameras “Arschlan” and accused her of not being Swiss. “Law and order, Ms. Arschlan, that didn’t exist in your state!” He shot her head.
Glarner responded to the fact that the green politician has dual Turkish-Swiss citizenship. Glarner, who regularly pushes the boundaries of decency, later stated that the confusion of Arslan’s name was a slip.
“That crosses a line for us”
The verbal derailment caused quite a stir, too high for the Cancer League. A planned commercial with Glarner is stopped even before it is presented to the public for the first time.
“A politician insulted and marginalized a fellow Swiss citizen and an elected representative due to their family origins,” Marc Kempe, spokesman for the Cancer League, told Tele Züri. “And for us that just transcends the limits of social and interpersonal decency.”
The Swiss Cancer League planned its campaign together with Bank Cler. The idea: the bank donates a certain amount to the Cancer League for each video view. But now the part with Andreas Glarner has been removed without replacement.
“For me this is completely incomprehensible”
The SVP National Council does not show any understanding for the expulsion: “I think it is not up to the Cancer League to judge who has exceeded the limits of decency, and yes: I was the one who warned about law and order,” he says. “Tele Züri”. However, Sibel Arslan and his colleagues on the Green Left council reportedly sided with the illegal occupation. “It is completely incomprehensible to me.”
Despite this interlude, the Swiss Cancer League’s publicity campaign with other federal MPs should begin this fall as planned. (dba)
