Hungary carries out border controls again
Hungary closed its borders at midnight. Due to the corona pandemic, the country is now carrying out checks again on its EU borders. Only those who meet one of the various exception criteria are allowed to enter.
Travelers living and working within 30 kilometers of the border, as well as business travelers and nursing staff, are excluded. Hungary’s solo effort has been criticized within the EU. More on this in the Tagesschau article:
216 new confirmed infections in Switzerland
The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) reports 216 recently confirmed coronavirus infections for Switzerland and Liechtenstein in one day. There were 163 cases on Monday, 292 on Sunday, 376 on Saturday, and 340 on Friday.
There have been a total of 42,393 laboratory-confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic, according to the BAG. Compared to Monday, there were 9 more hospital admissions. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 4,550 people have had to be treated in hospital for Covid 19 disease. The death toll increased by one and now stands at 1,727.
So far, 1,023,203 tests have been conducted for Sars-CoV-2, the causative agent of the respiratory disease Covid-19, in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. In one day, the new BAG 7517 tests were reported. The test’s positivity rate remains low at 4.9 percent.
Due to contact tracing, according to the BAG, 1,795 people were in isolation and 5,589 people were in quarantine on Sunday. In addition, 12,396 returnees from countries at risk were in quarantine.
The hotel business collapsed in the second quarter
The crown crisis has caused a collapse in the Swiss non-hotel industry. At the height of the restrictive measures in the second quarter, overnight stays in Swiss holiday apartments, youth hostels or camps were 62 percent lower than in the same period last year.
In total, the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) recorded 1.2 million overnight stays from April to June, as announced by the authority on the basis of provisional figures. In the same period last year there were 3.2 million overnight stays.
The main reason for the accident was travel restrictions during the shutdown. As a result, the foreigners disappeared. Their overnight stays amounted to just 104,000. For comparison: from April to June 2019, foreign tourists had booked a good million overnight stays in the Swiss non-standard hotel business.
As a result, the business depended on the natives. Swiss guests spent 1.1 million overnight stays in the non-hotel business. That’s half the level of the previous year.
“Grenchen partygoer” fails with oversight complaint
In the canton of Solothurn, according to the authorities, the contact tracing team correctly informed a young woman that she had ignored a Covid 19 isolation measure ordered at the end of June. The Department of the Interior dismissed a complaint of supervision of the woman. The Solothurn State Chancellery announced that the contact tracing team was not responsible for any misconduct. The woman, who was in isolation in June, alleged that she received an alleged misinformation over the phone.
The woman had tested positive for COVID-19 on June 22. Despite an orderly isolation until July 1, 2020 inclusive, she attended two events in Grenchen on June 27. As a precautionary measure, 280 contacts had to be quarantined for ten days. Among them was a person who subsequently tested positive for Covid-19.
A criminal complaint was filed against the culprit. According to the Epidemic Law, fines for violations of ordered quarantine and isolation measures can amount to 5,000 Swiss francs in the case of negligent behavior and up to 10,000 Swiss francs in the case of malicious behavior.
Israel reports a new high crown at the beginning of school
The number of new corona infections in Israel has reached a new record. As announced by the Ministry of Health on Tuesday, 2,159 new cases were registered the day before. This is the highest value recorded in one day in Israel since the outbreak of the pandemic. The previous high of 2129 was recorded on July 28.
On Tuesday, schools and kindergartens in Israel were reopened under Corona restrictions at the end of the summer vacation. Around 2.4 million children and young people learn in schools or go to daycare centers. In reality, the government’s goal had previously been to reduce the number of new corona infections to around 400 a day. It was decided at the last minute not to open schools in 23 of the so-called “red” towns with high crown numbers.
In France and Russia, too, the crown’s situation worsened to a worrying degree shortly before classes started. The French Ministry of Health spoke of an “exponential” increase in new corona infections.
China: exports leave the crisis behind
Manufacturing activity in China grew in August, the fastest increase in nearly a decade. The reason for this is an increase in new export orders after coronavirus restrictions have been eased around the world, as a survey by the international agency Markit shows.
The purchasing managers index (PMI) for the manufacturing sector rose from 52.8 in July to 53.1 last month. This was the fourth consecutive month of growth and the highest rate of expansion since January 2011. It beat analysts’ forecasts, who had expected a slight decline to 52.6.
The indicator is based on a survey of purchasing managers from more than 500 large companies. Companies are selected based on their share of China’s GDP according to the usual classification in the industry.
Swiss laboratories defend themselves against accusations
The president of the Swiss Association of Laboratories, Willi Conrad, rejects the criticism of the epidemiologist Marcel Salathé and the cantons for the slow delivery of the results of the tests in the contact tracing. The labs have greatly expanded their capabilities since April.
In an interview with Tamedia-Medien, Conrad said in an interview with the Tamedia media that the pace of the test processing has not changed. As a general rule, the test result is delivered the same day or the next day. But this is not always possible within 24 hours.
Currently the labs are well used with around 10,000 tests per day. The maximum theoretical capacity is 20,000 tests per day. In the first corona wave in April, the load was much higher and had reached the capacity limit.
Swiss laboratories worked much faster than some abroad. Many labs work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
