144 meters on the great Olympic hill of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Thanks to this set, in which he even telemarked upon landing, the Pole Dawid Kubacki flies to victory in the New Year’s competition. And not only that: it breaks the hill record (143.5 meters) that Simon Ammann set in 2010 and Marius Lindvik (No) tied a year ago.
Garmisch’s other jumpers do not come close to Kubacki, who in addition to his 144 meters in the second jump reached 139 meters first. Second place Halvor Granerud (No) jumps 137m and 136m. Kubacki’s compatriots Piotr Zyla came in third (129.5 / 137) and Kamil Stoch in fourth (135/132) just behind Granerud. Oberstdorf winner Karl Geiger is fifth on New Years (131/138).
Overall leadership anyway at Granerud
Because Kubacki was only 15th in the opening competition before the turn of the year in Oberstdorf, Granerud took the lead in the overall standings with 555 points, ahead of Geiger (551), Stoch (548) and the flyer. Kubacki (546).
And what about Simon Ammann, whose Garmisch hill record no longer exists? The four-time Olympic champion (2002/2010) failed in qualifying before New Year’s Eve.
Gregor Deschwanden was the best Swiss on Friday the 19th. The 29-year-old from Lucerne jumps 128 and 129.5 meters. Dominik Peter (19) is eliminated in the first round, he is 49. (str)
