The fourth to last day of the 103rd Giro d’Italia was a change of leader. Almeida lost the pink jersey to Kelderman.
The winner of the steep mountain stage in Lombardy was Jai Hindley. After a final 9km climb to Cancano Lakes, the Australian prevailed in a two-man sprint ahead of Britain’s Tao Geoghegan Hart.
The duo had already distinguished themselves from the other co-favorites by overall victory on the long climb to Stilfserjoch.
Almeida is left behind
Wilco Kelderman finished the stage in fifth place. However, this was enough to get Joao Almeida out of the leader’s jersey. The 22-year-old Portuguese lost almost 5 minutes at the top and fell back to 5th place in the general classification. Dutchman Kelderman is now 12 seconds ahead of his Sunweb Hindley teammate and another 3 seconds ahead of Geoghegan Hart.
On Friday, on the way to Asti, the longest stage of the current tour of Italy is scheduled with 259 km. The decision on the overall victory will be made at the weekend on the last mountain stage around Sestriere and the last time trial in Milan.
