  • Local hero Karl Geiger leaves the competition behind in the opening jump of the Four Hills Tournament in Oberstdorf.
  • Gregor Deschwanden is the only Swiss to score World Cup points.
  • Simon Ammann and Dominik Peter cannot qualify for the final.

Karl Geiger from Oberstdorf has won the start of the Four Hills Tournament. The 27-year-old referred Poles Kamil Stoch and Marius Lindvik from Norway to the other places on the podium. Geiger jumped 127 and 136.5 m in the snowy Allgäu. In the last two events in Engelberg, he was sentenced to watch due to a corona infection.

The longest set of the day was scored by Markus Eisenbichler (5th). The German improved after a weak first attempt and sailed to the 142 meter mark on the decision. It was a disappointment for tour favorite Halvor Egner Granerud. The Norwegian, who had won the last 5 World Cup competitions, had to settle for fourth place.

Gregor Deschwanden was the 27 best Swiss. The Lucerne man was able to qualify for the eighth time in a row – a personal record – for the decision (121m), where he even improved a bit (123.5m).

Ammann and Peter lose the second jump

Simon Ammann improved significantly compared to his previous results this winter. With a 120-meter set, he narrowly missed the final round in 32nd place. The competition also ended after the first jump for 19-year-old Dominik Peter (105.5m, 54th).

Poland first quarantined, then on a hill

There was chaos before the start of the tour for the Polish athletes. After a positive corona test at Klemens Muranka, the entire team was excluded from the classification at Oberstdorf.

On Tuesday morning, the team surrounding the previous year’s winner Dawid Kubacki and Olympic champion Kamil Stoch had a third negative test, after which the health department responsible for Oberallgäu lifted the quarantine for the team. As a result, the competition was held with 62 starters without a knockout system.
