A Mexican who was once considered the fattest man in the world has beaten the coronavirus. Juan Pedro Franco, 36, told the AFP agency that he had been losing weight and exercising for years, as well as operations to reduce the size of his stomach.

Franco previously weighed 595 kilos, making him the world’s heaviest man in the Guinness Book of Records for 2017. He has since lost 209 pounds. But his long history of diabetes, high blood pressure and chronic lung disease made it difficult for him to fight the coronavirus infection.

Franco, who lives in the state of Aguascalientes, in central Mexico, said he suffered from fever, body aches, headaches and shortness of breath. “It is a very aggressive disease,” he said. A quarter of the more than 74,000 people in Mexico who died as a result of the coronavirus infection were overweight, according to official information.
