For Stefan Küng, the bronze medal in the World Championship time trial is the confirmation of a perfectly coordinated preparation.
On the sixth attempt it worked: finally Stefan Küng was able to really show his great skill in a World Cup in fighting against the clock. After finishing tenth in Yorkshire last year, Imola took the podium for the first time: Küng lived up to the high expectations. The bronze medal caused mixed feelings in Thurgau.
“I would have liked to trade my bike for the one with the world championship stripes on it,” said the 26-year-old after the World Cup time trial. “You always start with the title.”
In view of the stiff competition, he was still “happy” with the bronze medal. Especially against the outstanding winner Filippo Ganna, finally there was no grass. “He drove in a league of his own.”
The tour departure was rewarded
In ranking his success, Küng also emphasized preparation. He had canceled the Tour de France before the last 5 stages to be ready.
“All the work we did together with the team paid off. It was worth getting off the tour earlier so I could really prepare, ”says Küng. Time trial as a discipline requires a lot of detailed work. “Today you can’t take it with you in passing.”
Reussers take advantage of motivation
Küng was inspired by the success of Marlen Reusser the day before. He is sometimes placed alongside the female silver medalist as an advisor. “If she won the silver and I finished 15th, it would have seemed a bit stupid too. I really wanted to do the same. “
With the title of the European championship and the bronze of the World Cup, Küng’s time trial record can be seen this year. There is still room for improvement again in Antwerp in 2021. The scenario would be right: it is the 100th edition of the Road Bike World Championship.
