The Lassiri family wanted to spend a few pleasant days camping in Tuscany. On Sunday night, the parents settled in the bungalow, the two sisters Jannat († 3) and Malak Lassiri († 14) sleep in a tent next door.
In the morning at 7 o’clock a storm breaks out that devastates the “Verde Mare” campsite in the Tuscan town of Marina di Massa. The cyclone rips a four meter high poplar tree, which falls on the tent! The two girls in it don’t stand a chance. Rescuers try to revive little Jannat Lassiri, without success. His older sister Malak dies shortly after in the hospital.
For the storm they stayed another night
The family of Moroccan roots comes from Turin, just under 300 kilometers away, Italian media report. The parents came with their four children. The older sister (19) also slept in the tent, but was not harmed. The younger brother (3) slept with his parents. The family actually wanted to go home on Saturday, informs holiday guests according to the Italian online portal “Firenze”. But due to the approaching storm, they waited another day.
It is currently investigating how the poplar fell on the store. “We are trying to find out if it was foreseeable that the tree could fall in bad weather,” Massa Carrara prosecutor Piero Capizzoto told Italian media. An agronomist will now check the state of the tree.
“I understand that at the moment there are many questions to be answered about the safety of our structures and the state of the vegetation”, says Marco Lucetti, president of “Ageparc Massa Carrara”, the association of campsites in the region. He added: “The storm was extraordinarily strong.” Except for the two girls, no one was injured in the camp.
Condolences from Prime Minister Conte
Holiday guests are shocked. A man living in a bungalow right next to the tent heard the tragedy: “I thought it was the hood of a car that was closing, but then I heard the screams,” he told the Italian online portal “Firenze”. Then he ran out and was surprised: “If the store had been only a meter away, the storm would not have hit it.”
The local mayor, Francesco Persiani, expresses his condolences to the family: he speaks of a “tragedy that nobody expected”. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte also sends a message of condolence: “The tragic death of the two sisters is deeply shocking. A holiday turned into a tragedy, “wrote the prime minister on Twitter.
