Air mattress, towel, solar oil, and just lie down in the sun. That is no longer enough if you want to go to the beaches of Italy this summer. Disinfectants, masks, perhaps even a Covid wristband with distance alarm belong in the bath bag. And: the cell phone is a must.
Because sun loungers and parasols must be reserved in advance by means of applications. Lots of regulations, but plenty of room for each guest who bathes. Reason: you need the contact details of the guests to be able to trace possible contagion chains. This is the new beach culture.
Many Italian beaches open from May 18.
Italy is also cautiously facilitating access to the sea and lakes. Starting on May 18, many Adriatic and Mediterranean beaches open. Most of the shores of Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore remain closed to sun worshipers for now. If it is open, only during the week. At least hikers will be able to go to the lakes next week. From June there will be more, if Corona continues the game. Depending on the infection situation, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte (55) promises further relaxation.
Protective measures are strict. Five meters between the umbrellas, ten square meters of space for each plot. A maximum of four people is allowed under one umbrella. The umbrella should not be changed during the holidays. The sofas are two meters from the next unit. Access and exit to the sea are separate. Distance is sacred. Even in the water. Splashes with a minimum distance of one and a half meters. Masks are a must on the way to the umbrella.
Application, spatial concept and anti-covid bracelet
Designers and architects are already presenting concepts for beach plots. There is, for example, the “Safe Beach Area”, sunbathing areas delimited with a barrier tape. Or the elegant beach domes made of bamboo. Startups play around with apps and gadgets. A company offers “Sun Bonds”, coupons for coveted umbrellas. Another sells anti-Covid bracelets that sound too close.
At the moment, only Italians come to the beaches. Because Italy is still closing its borders. The tourism industry expects to open on June 15. So far, the government has been unable to promise.
