The Swiss skiers manage to convince at the start of the season in Sölden. Michelle Gisin narrowly missed the podium in the giant slalom in fourth place. The victory is for Marta Bassino.

In the end, Michelle Gisin was only 17 hundredths away from her first podium of her career in giant slalom. Engelberg’s wife was already in fourth position at halftime, the place in the top 3 finally snatched from the Slovak Petra Vlhova, who, thanks to the best time in the second round, finished on the podium from the tenth position.

The second best Swiss woman was Lara Gut-Behrami in eighth place. Nidwalden’s Andrea Ellenberger also performed well, improving from 25th to 11th in the second round, tying her career-best result.

Wendy Holdener, who had started the race with the No. 1 start, was unlucky. Schwyzerin were seventh at halftime but fell back to 26th in the second heat after a serious error at the top. Holdener only got the nod from doctors at the beginning of the week after breaking his right fibula head in a training fall in Saas-Fee in early September.

Priska Nufer finished the race in 22nd place. Camille Rast and Corinne Suter simply missed their entry in race two.

The race was won by Italian Marta Bassino, who had already led after the first heat. For the 24-year-old Piedmontese, it is the second World Cup victory after her success almost a year ago in the giant slalom at Killington. In the end, she won 14 hundredths ahead of her compatriot Federica Brignone, who had won both the overall World Cup and the discipline standings in the giant slalom last season.

American Mikael Shiffrin, who suffers from back problems, decided not to start. The race took place without spectators due to the coronavirus pandemic.
