Whether it’s deer rutting in Wallonia, whale migration off the California coast, or bird migration in the Strait of Gibraltar – big bucks can be made by traveling to spectacular natural spectacles. Researchers in Frankfurt have now found that contact with wild animals is not only expensive for people across Europe, and sometimes expensive too.
According to the work, the birds that roam freely in the area are as important to the well-being of Europeans as a surge. Ten percent more bird species in the area increased people’s life satisfaction across Europe at least as much as an increase in income of the same size, writes the team led by the Center’s PhD student Joel Methorst Senckenberg Research Institute for Biodiversity and Climate in the journal Ecological Economics.
