Indonesia punishes those who reject the masks in the city of Jakarta with a very peculiar method: those who reject the masks can choose whether they prefer to do community service, pay a fine or lie in a coffin for about a minute.
The intention of the coffin punishment is to make people aware of the worst fatal consequences of their actions and make them aware of what they could do to themselves and other citizens if they do not wear a mask.
Public humiliation
The punishment with the judgment thrown in the coffin is documented in a video of YouTube. It shows a coffin placed in the middle of the street and decorated with flowers. “Think about what happens if you get Covid-19,” an official told one of those rejecting the mask in the open casket.
After about a minute, he is allowed out of the coffin again, and is immediately replaced by the next one who rejects the mask.
It is unclear whether the punishment will be a lesson to those who reject the mask. In any case, it is a humiliation when they are displayed in a coffin on the street and photographed by onlookers.
In Venezuela they have to do push-ups
In Venezuela it is similar to Jakarta: here those who reject the mask are punished with push-ups and saying slogans, among other things.
As an alternative, there is also community service, in which workers have to carry a slip with the inscription “I have to do social service because I don’t wear a mask.”
