The new school building with a triple gym will provide space for 600 students. The two Basel government councilors, Conradin Cramer (LDP) and Hans-Peter Wessels (SP) and the Christoph Merian Foundation (CMS), as owners of the area in the far north, announced this to the media on Wednesday.

“The high school will play an important role when it comes to living in the new district and integrating it into the Gundeldinger neighborhood,” said CMS Principal Beat von Wartburg.

Herzog & de Meuron plan 800 apartments

In late 2017, CMS presented its urban design for the far north. According to the plans of the architects Herzog & de Meuron, a new district is planned with around 800 apartments, three high-rise buildings up to 151 meters high and two new parks. The shopping center will remain in the same volume, but visually it will take a back seat under a large roof garden.

The corresponding development plan is expected to be presented to the Grand Council for treatment in mid-2021. The new district will be realized from 2025.
