The aviation industry is in its greatest crisis. As a result of Corona’s travel restrictions, travelers are staying at home and machines on the ground. Swiss CEO Thomas Klühr (58), who will step down at the end of the year, expects 1,000 fewer jobs in the next two years, with no layoffs. That is what Klühr said in an interview with the newspapers “CH Media”.
So that there are no layoffs, says Klühr, the fluctuation must develop as in previous years, while the airline is betting on three parallel measures: freezing of hiring, part-time models with salary resignation and early retirement.
Smaller fleet, layoffs cannot be ruled out
Especially since there are no more signs of a market recovery, Klühr expects a 20 percent contraction in the Swiss business in the medium to long term. If the situation does not improve, layoffs can hardly be avoided.
Klühr: “If we realize in the first quarter of summer 2021 that the situation is not improving, especially on long-distance routes, the 1,000 jobs will not be enough.”
In addition to the reduction, the fleet must also be reduced, according to Klühr. (kes)
