“I’m incredibly happy”: Mick Schumacher will drive in Formula 1 in 2021
Formula 1 has a Schumacher again. Some eight years after the final retirement of record champion Michael Schumacher, his son Mick has reached the premier class of motorsport.
Mick Schumacher, 21, will be a regular driver for the US Haas team next year and will receive a “multi-year” contract. The racing team announced this on Wednesday. The close collaboration between Haas and Ferrari was helpful to Schumacher. He has been part of the young academy of the traditional Italian team since January 2019.
On Friday next week, Schumacher will drive his first kilometers for Haas during practice in Abu Dhabi. It is also used in the test for young drivers after the end of the season at the Yas Marina circuit.
His promotion to the highest formula class was carefully planned. This year he continues to drive in Formula 2 for the Italian team Prema and is the overall leader in the last two races of the season at the weekend in Bahrain. As in Formula 3, in which he won the European Championship title in 2018, Mick Schumacher only developed his qualities in the second top flight in the second year.
The teammate is also a rookie
In Formula 1 he will now compete for a team that disappointed this year. With just three points, Haas is second to last in the constructors’ championship. The current two regulars, Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen, have to leave the racing team that entered Formula 1 in 2016. Last weekend, the terrifying Grosjean fire inadvertently made headlines. As if by miracle, the Frenchman survived the horrific accident almost unscathed.
Haas had already introduced Schumacher’s future teammate, Russian Nikita Mazepin, on Tuesday. The 21-year-old is promoted by his wealthy father Dimitri and is also a newcomer to the queen class.
The son of a legend
Given that neither the rules nor the cars will change significantly next year, Mick Schumacher and Mazepin’s chances of success in the sport are initially low. The team leader, Günther Steiner, sees the newcomers as part of the new structure, and Haas wants to start over in 2022. “It would be an honor for us, something we could be proud of,” he had already commented on the Mick Schumacher’s engagement before the announcement.
The multiple world champions of Formula 1
Schumacher’s father, Michael, won a total of seven world titles, won 91 races and provided many unforgettable moments. Since a skiing accident in the French Alps, the 51-year-old has been living completely protected from the public. He is recovering with his family in the Swiss foster home on Lake Geneva from the severe traumatic brain injury he suffered in his fall in late 2013. (ram / sda / dpa)
