Unpleasant surprise for Heinz Burger * (63) in shopping mecca Dietlikon ZH. After a visit to the electronics wholesale market, the bus driver and his daughter (34) want to stop by a furniture store, the big yellow one with a family atmosphere. “We were looking for a dining table for my daughter’s apartment,” says Burger, BLICK reader.
But they don’t go very far, at the entrance to the Ikea branch in Dietlikon, attention is drawn to the mask requirement in the canton of Zurich: “No mask entry prohibited,” it says on a sign. And below the phrase: “This also applies to all people with a medical certificate.”
Daughter had pneumonia
This means that even people who are exempted from wearing a mask for medical reasons cannot enter the furniture store. “You can’t come in here, I told my daughter,” Burger says. Your daughter has just recovered from severe pneumonia that was not caused by Corona. A medical certificate exempts her from wearing a mask for two months: “My daughter cannot breathe well with a mask,” says the concerned father. That is severe discrimination.
Ikea confirms the description of the BLICK reader: The corresponding regulations apply to all places where, according to official regulations, there is an obligation to wear a mask. “These are currently Dietlikon ZH, Aubonne VD and Vernier GE.”
Verbal attacks on employees
But why does Ikea go beyond what the official requirements demand? “Our top priority is to protect employees and our visitors, and therefore we do not make any exceptions,” says BLICK in the application.
That means: Anyone who refuses to wear a mask does not enter an Ikea furniture store that requires a mask, and no dispensing will help: “We do not have the expertise to distinguish between a medical certificate and a certificate purchased online,” Ikea justifies the strict stance. “There were tears because female employees were verbally attacked by opponents of the mask,” added an Ikea spokesperson.
