He has a huge heart. But not in the chest. But in the hands. It is not yours. But that of a giraffe († 17).
We are talking about Merelize van der Merwe (32). He lives in the South African province of Limpopo, where he runs a citrus farm. His great passion is hunting. And her husband satisfied her for Valentine’s Day with a very special gift: a hunt in a natural park. The goal: kill a giraffe!
Van der Merwe posted photos of himself with a giraffe heart on Facebook. Beneath a video of a giraffe’s heart being cut, he proudly writes that the organ weighs around 11 kilograms.
“Go to hell!”
Since then, the Internet has been hunting the huntress: “Go to hell!”, Writes one user. A woman says that the South African’s heart should be ripped out and given to the animals.
Another commenter wrote: “You are sick. Find a good psychiatrist, only a sick mind can laugh at such an abomination. “Another woman says, in a nutshell:” I hope the lions catch you.
Van der Merwe herself claims that by posting the pictures of the giraffe’s heart she only wanted to poke fun at the animal welfare lobby.
Giraffe spotted, plans changed
In other Facebook photos, the 32-year-old poses next to the giraffe that was shot. She proudly holds the rifle in one hand and leans on the giraffe with the other. In another image, the South African is behind the dead animal. Your arms are outstretched. She shines all over her face.
How did the haunting images come about? Van der Merwe and her husband were planning a trip to the Sun City resort in northern South Africa for Valentine’s Day weekend when a friend suddenly contacted them. He tells them that much sought after prey has been seen in a wildlife park. And one that Marelize van der Merwe would like.
“My husband knew this was my dream”
He waited for years for his own perfect bull, as the South African is quoted in the “Mirror”. “The older a bull gets, the darker it gets. I love the fur and the fact that it is such an iconic animal for Africa. “
The couple’s plans for Valentine’s weekend would have quickly changed. “My wonderful husband Gerhardt knew this was my dream,” says van der Merwe. “For two weeks I counted the days like a child.” The fun of the hunt is said to have cost the equivalent of 1900 francs.
Already 500 dead animals
He shot the 17-year-old giraffe with a “perfect head-on shot to the neck,” as he writes in a Facebook video. It was “fantastic” to do the knockout afterward. “Even if it wasn’t necessary.”
Van der Merwe is said to have started hunting at the age of five, according to “Mirror.” It has killed 500 animals to date. Including lions, leopards, elephants.
Van der Merwe also doesn’t see anything reprehensible about his latest trophy. On the contrary: it says that the demolition of that day generated work for eleven people. Also, there is now a lot of meat for the locals.
