Public life in Europe has never been so restricted since the end of World War II as in the past two months. We showed how the individual states reacted to the coronavirus in four phases, and now we relax the measurements again.

Italy is the first country to impose a curfew across the country on March 9. The country temporarily becomes the global epicenter of the crown crisis. Most other European countries gradually follow it with restrictions on public life up to strict curfews.

Phase I: Europe closes public life

March 13 to March 22

All European countries closed the borders on March 23. With one exception: Belarus. To date, the country has not taken any crown measures.

Phase II: individual countries even introduce national curfews

March 23 to April 15

In mid-April, the first countries announce that they will begin to relax the measures. It starts with Austria.

Phase III: the first schools and shops are opened in countries like Austria and Denmark

April 16 to April 24

Since May 13, France, Austria, Germany and Switzerland are the first to announce that they will reopen the borders. The Swiss border with Austria and Germany is due to reopen from June 15. Justice Minister Karin Keller-Sutter held the corresponding talks with her counterparts in Germany, Austria and France.

It is still unclear what will happen if Switzerland or France open the border. It is also not known when the Swiss borders with Italy could be reopened.

Phase IV: Switzerland, Austria, Germany and France announce the opening of borders
