Appenzell Ausserrhoden has five times more Covid 19 infections per 100,000 inhabitants than Germany. Because the crown sufferers were having a wedding, and everyone fell silent as infections increased.
Some things arrive a little later in the Appenzell area, as was the case with the corona virus. The first wave practically passed the two Appenzells. The graph of the number of cases showed more line than curve from February to late summer, even in March, at the height of the first wave, only a few cases were recorded. The canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden will be even more affected by the second wave.
The canton doctor said it at a press conference on Monday in no uncertain terms: “The situation is getting enormously worse. We have five times more infections per 100,000 inhabitants than Germany. “Last week, almost 200 infections were reported in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden and two people died. One of the reasons for the outbreak was two weeks ago: a girlfriend and boyfriend of the Schwellbrunn community were invited to their wedding on October 10. 200 guests came, and several brought Corona with them.
“We have several indications that several guests came to the wedding with symptoms,” says Ausserrhod health director Yves Noël Balmer. Appenzell authorities do not know if people with symptoms knew about their infection. According to health director Balmer, this only plays a minor role. “It should have been clear to everyone: getting sick in such a crowd, that just doesn’t work now.”
Everyone should be silent
A week after the big wedding party, the Schwellbrunners also held an Oktoberfest. There were several wedding guests among the people at the party. The virus spread uncontrollably in the community of 1,400 people. More and more cases of Schwellbrunn were reported to the authorities in the canton’s capital, Herisau.
Last week, the number of Schwellbrunn cases skyrocketed and authorities became skeptical. At least 30 villagers have tested positive. The true figure is probably much higher. The Appenzell authorities don’t know exactly. Because the wedding guests had agreed not to get tested to avoid quarantine.
“We have several guest references to this type of arrangement,” says Yves Noël Balmer. The town’s businesses also played an inglorious role. There are indications that individual companies have encouraged employees not to report to the canton to avoid major failures, says Balmer.
Among the guests are those with difficult courses
It was only when Health Director Balmer personally intervened with the groom that the canton received a list of the wedding guests. The festival was too far away to contain the damage. Now there are 24 people in Appenzell Ausserrhoden due to Corona in hospital. Some of the infected wedding guests suffer from severe courses.
Health Director Balmer says: “We are angry and dismayed. We are investing millions to overcome this crisis. And then a bunch of people just ignore all the rules. “The canton is now reviewing the ads. Exact reconstruction of the facts is difficult, says Balmer.
Schwellbrunn’s wedding is just one of several cases in eastern Switzerland that have caused negative headlines nationally in recent weeks. The canton of Thurgau had to quarantine 300 people at the end of September after they celebrated at a party with the significant name “Chlöpf di weg”. Compared to the Schwellbrunnern, the Thurgau party guests came out lightly. Of the 300 people in quarantine, all were tested for symptoms. Six of them tested positive.
