Have you never caused damage before, but are still paying double for car insurance? It sounds unthinkable, but it is so easy if, from the point of view of the insurance company, you have the “wrong” passport: as the Internet comparison portal Comparis.ch reveals, foreign citizens in Switzerland often pay significantly more.
For example, drivers from Albania, Kosovo, Serbia or Turkey have to accept heavy surcharges, in extreme cases up to 89 percent (Basler, Police Baloise Direct M) or 88 percent (TCS, product M). On average, it is also significantly more expensive for car owners from Portugal or our neighboring country Italy to insure a car; Please refer to the table above in our image gallery.
Each insurer decides for himself
How can it be? “The essence of insurance is solidarity with risk,” says Comparis mobility expert Andrea Auer (34). Statistics would be used to calculate the premium in order to calculate the probability of damage. Auer: “If a driver has no accidents, he will still be evaluated on the basis of nationality and may pay more.” The sometimes massive differences between providers are due to the fact that insurers use similar statistics, but weight the nationality factor differently. “
An example of calculation: if you take out comprehensive insurance with Zurich and pay an annual premium of 887 francs with a Swiss passport, you have to spend 65 percent more with a Turkish passport. More than 1,400 francs. With the Axa it is even 71 percent more. But because the Axa relative to a Swiss passport is cheaper at 765 francs in the calculation example, you can still get away with a Turkish nationality at just over 1300 francs. “The insurance with the highest premium surcharge for foreigners does not necessarily have to be the most expensive,” sums up Auer, “because premiums between providers still vary widely.”
A provider without national penalty
By the way: if you check Helvetia, for example, and declare “Turkey” instead of “Switzerland” as your nationality, you won’t even get an offer for the customer and service profiles requested by Comparis in the example. In Generali, on the other hand, everyone pays the same because, according to Comparis, it is the only insurance in this analysis without penalty for foreigners.
For the analysis, Comparis examined 232,553 online offers for 14 cars and twelve nationalities (including Switzerland) and 79 places of residence.
