“He is someone who stands up” – SVP of St. Gallen clearly recommends Mathias Gabathuler for city council and city council, despite criticism of his leadership as rector

Good news for Mathias Gabathuler: The FDP candidate for City Council and City of St. Gallen Presidium is unanimously recommended by the SVP party leadership. The support comes shortly after it became known that Gabathuler, as rector of the cantonal school, had made a personnel decision that ended up before the arbitration board. SVP President Donat Kuratli says Gabathuler’s actions in this case show leadership.

Mathias Gabathuler (FDP) wants to go to the city council in the second vote on November 29, on the one hand, and defend the city council for freedom, on the other. It has to prevail both against Trudy Cozzio (CVP) for the seat of the municipal council and against Maria Pappa (SP) for the presidium.

Gabathuler is now backed by the SVP. In a statement, the party writes that it supports the FDP candidate for both the presidium and the city council. The recommendation is not entirely surprising, as the SVP withdrew its city council candidate, Karin Winter-Dubs, two days after her disappointing first ballot result.

The moment is still remarkable. The SVP statement comes just hours after the newspaper made public that a Gabathulers personnel decision at the Brühl canton school, where he has been rector for ten years, had ended before the arbitration board. For the president of the SVP, Donat Kuratli, this case does not matter: “He stayed there and took responsibility. Mathias Gabathuler thus demonstrates leadership strength. “With Gabathuler, the city is acquiring a city councilman and city president who are experienced in leadership and campaigning for the city with” clear goals. “

Further slippage to the left should be avoided.

Gabathuler is also closer to SVP than Trudy Cozzio, her middle-class competitor for city council. “A candidate must have a vision and position himself clearly. Mathias Gabathuler does that in contrast to the CVP candidate, ”says Kuratli. The fact that the CVP, contrary to the agreement, reappeared among the bourgeois parties in the second round, also annoyed the SVP. “CVP has to agree to that with its own conscience.” Kuratli says it is now important to focus on one candidate and avoid “another slide to the left” in the executive branch of the city of Sanktgall.
