For tomorrow’s 65th birthday, a look back at Mel Gibson’s career and how he ruined it.
1. The breakthrough

Mel Gibson received only $ 400 for his first role. In 1977, the drama school graduate played a beach boy in the surfer thriller “Summer City.”
Soon, however, he was able to negotiate wages. For his breakthrough in the action movie “Mad Max” (1979) it was already $ 15,000. For part 3 of the Mad Max series in 1985, then a million dollars.
He later made $ 25 million per movie. In the 1990s, Mel Gibson was one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood.
2. The rise

3. The support of the Church

He worked on his third film for eleven years: “The Passion of the Christ” (2003) about the last hours of the life of Jesus.
The film celebrated great commercial successes, especially in the US, also thanks to the support of conservative churches.
Mel Gibson is a fundamentalist Christian. You should be against abortion and contraception and not believe in the theory of evolution. Gibson has nine children with three different wives.
4. The accident

Even before the theatrical premiere of “The Passion of the Christ” Gibson was criticized for his anti-Semitic, racist and homophobic statements.
After the brutal movie, more and more Jewish communities around the world resisted. The film is openly anti-Semitic and incites hatred against Jews.
Gibson was later arrested drunk by police officers. After which he uttered anti-Semitic abuse. This ultimately destroyed his public image. He was rarely cast in serious movies.
5. The next scandal

When he tried to return in 2010, another scandal broke out: recordings of telephone conversations with his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva were made public. He insulted her for this and even threatened to kill her.
Grigorieva also accused him of beating and mistreating her.
Then his former manager ended the cooperation. The role he should have played in the comedy “Hangover 2” has been withdrawn.
6. And today?
