As the Isala Clinic in Zwolle announced on Tuesday, Jan Wildschut had used his own sperm for artificial insemination. He let his patients believe that he came from anonymous donors. The clinic spoke of “morally unacceptable” behavior.
Wildschut worked at the clinic from 1981 to 1993, but did not learn of the facts until the end of 2019. For reasons of transparency, he has now decided to make public the family of the doctor and the children he has conceived. The Spitavers did not rule out the possibility that he could be the biological father of more children.
DNA tests uncover facts
According to a report in the local newspaper “De Stentor”, one of the girls conceived by artificial insemination found out through a commercial database that she has the same DNA as a niece of the gynecologist who died in 2009. “We never thought that he himself could be the sperm donor, “reported an unidentified father. Wildschut always seemed to be very “kind, committed and honest”.
According to its own information, the responsible control authority IGJ does not want to initiate any investigation in the case because the processes are developed in a period in which such treatments were not yet regulated. Just last year there was a scandal in the Netherlands when DNA testing revealed that the former director of a sperm bank had often used his own sperm instead of donor sperm and had 49 children.
