Before the penultimate giant struck this winter, the atmosphere is extremely explosive! The two main characters of the Kugel-Krimi prepare just a few training tracks at the Austrian Reiteralm in Kranjska Gora. While Marco Odermatt trains with his teammates as always, Frenchman Alexis Pinturault drives alone, as is often the case.
“It has happened in the past that Alexis has joined us for some training sessions,” says Swiss Ski Giant Slalom boss Helmut Krug. But this time he had not received a request from Pinturault for a joint unit. “And it’s probably better this way,” Krug says with a smile. “Otherwise Marco and Alexis would have probably been exhausted during practice, because nobody wants to show a weakness before the most important races.”
It’s about two crystal balls
Especially since the 23-year-old from Nidwalden and the 29-year-old hotelier’s son from Courchevel are fighting over two crystal balls. In the Giant Slalom World Cup, “Pintu” is 25 points ahead of “Odi”. In the overall World Cup, Alexis’ lead over Marco is 81 points with six races remaining. At least in Saturday’s giants’ duel in Kranjska Gora (Sln) a preliminary or even final decision could be made.
Notable: Both celebrated their World Cup podium debut in this classic in Slovenia. Pinturault was 19 years old when he finished second behind Carlo Janka at the Podkoren track in March 2011. Odermatt took the podium for the first time in 2019 at the age of 21 at Kranjska Gora (third behind Norway’s Kristoffersen and Windingstad).
Pinturault promotes slalom training
By the way: Pinturault has trained more slalom than giants at the Reiteralm in recent days. This strategy makes sense for the man with 33 World Cup victories, after all, there are still two slalom on the program. And as Odermatt has never raced slalom since the 2018 Swiss championship, Pinturault (3 slalom wins) could take the decisive advantage in this discipline.
Bernhard Russi warned Odermatt in his BLICK column that he should also get his slalom skis out of the basement. This suggestion made Marco shake his head at first: “My slalom skills are too poor to score points in this discipline.” Now, however, Coach Krug says: “In an emergency, we will bring Marco’s slalom skis to Lenzerheide with us …”
Perren expert in the «Alpentalk»: “Then Odermatt will collect the slalom skis from the basement.”(02:21)
Odermatt is already number 1 at home
In Buochs, the birthplace of Odermatt, it is already clear who is clear number 1. Master carpenter Stefan Barmettler has built a three-meter-high one in which the plaques of Marco’s World Cup victories are nailed. . It is quite possible that Kranjska Gora lyrics could be added on Saturday night.
Before leaving for Slovenia, the six-time junior world champion experienced a moment of shock: Marco flew spectacularly in Reiteralm training! But he immediately gives the go-ahead: “The landing was a bit bumpy, but all is well!”
