Edward Lodewijk “Eddie” van Halen died of cancer at the age of 65. This was announced by his son.
The Dutch-American rock musician was one of the most influential and style-defining guitarists in rock.
Together with his brother Alex he was a founding member of the hard rock band Van Halen.
“I can’t believe I have to write that, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning,” his son Wolfgang Van Halen wrote on Twitter Tuesday.
Edward van Halen was born in the Netherlands in 1955 and moved to the United States with his parents as a child. There he played the piano and began to learn guitar and drums. Together with his brother, they founded a band in the early 1970s; Years later, with the self-titled debut album Van Halen (1978), he followed a meteoric rise to one of the highest paid live bands and made Eddie van Halen one of the most famous guitarists overnight.
In recent years he had recovered from cancer. But now the exceptional guitarist succumbed to another cancer.
