With Graubünden, another mountain canton decides to keep the ski areas open. Only après-ski is prohibited.
- After Valais, Ticino and Bern, Graubünden is now also deciding to keep its ski areas open during the festive season.
- The hospitals in Grisons currently have enough space to also treat people with sports injuries.
- However, the Graubünden government limits the sale of alcohol and daily tickets.
The Grisons ski resorts can start your holiday business. The government has given the mountain railways the green light for now. In front of the media, Chief Financial Officer Marcus Caduff said Monday afternoon that the number of corona cases remained stable at a high level. Regional hospitals currently have sufficient capacity to accept people with sports accidents in addition to Covid patients.
“However,” said Caduff, “the situation is extremely dynamic and therefore must be assessed on a daily basis.” For him, it is clear that as long as the mobility of people is not restricted, Grisons will be full during Christmas and New Years, regardless of whether the ski areas are open or closed.
“Many Swiss will want to escape the Corona blues,” Caduff believes. With the ski areas closed, people would focus too much on the valleys and towns, Caduff says. “Guests are dispersed in the ski area within the framework of strict protection concepts, which reduces the pressure on the localities.”
Several cantons in central and eastern Switzerland have closed their ski areas. Engelberg (OW) or Andermatt (UR) remain closed. The Graubünden government is also aware that this could have an evasive effect on Graubünden.
To stop the possible attack, the Grisons government decided to limit the number of people in the ski areas. The number of winter sports enthusiasts will be limited to two-thirds of the last peak days, the canton said when asked. To achieve this, the sale of day and half day tickets will be limited.
Therefore, the canton advises to buy a ticket online in advance. Caduff appealed to ski tourists who are planning a day trip to Graubünden. “Check urgently on the mountain train website if there are still tickets available.”
Relief on the mountain railways
To this day it was unclear whether the railways could do their business on vacation or not. As a result, Martin Hug, President of the Graubünden Mountain Railways, is relieved. “After a shaky day, this is good news, we were hoping the government would give us permission.”
If the situation in the canton of Graubünden does not change drastically in the coming days, the ski areas may be open initially until January 3.
