While the crown situation in the rest of Switzerland is slowly softening, the number of infections is increasing in both Basel. The numbers make you sit up and take note: on Friday alone, 110 new cases of Covid-19 were reported in the canton of Basel-Stadt. On Wednesday there were 139. Six people died in the canton of the city this week as a result of the virus.
The canton of Basel-Stadt has now announced a press conference on short notice on Friday afternoon at 2:30 pm It deals with epidemiological development and new cantonal measures, as announced by the authorities. A look at other cantons shows what measures could be taken here: in Ticino, for example, no more than five people are allowed to gather at the same time. The Bern model could also be used in Basel. Cinemas, museums and concert halls are closed for the moment. The cantonal government only extended the measures on Thursday.
In the canton of Geneva, however, there has been a state of emergency since the end of October. The restaurant and bars are closed. Also, gyms or hairdressing salons. Are the Basel authorities taking similarly drastic measures?
Government members Lukas Engelberger, Head of the Department of Health, and Christoph Brutschin, Head of the Department of Economic, Social and Environmental Affairs spoke.
Telebasel will broadcast the press conference live online and on television from 2:30 p.m.
