Gossip in the party – Zürcher SP attacks his own governing council – News

  • The Social Democrats of the canton of Zurich distance themselves from their councilor Mario Fehr.
  • In a letter they demand that the governing council keep the books.
  • The conflict over emergency accommodation for rejected asylum seekers in Urdorf has been brewing for a long time.

It’s no secret: there are always differences between Mario Fehr and his group. The Socialist Youth have repeatedly called for his resignation, most recently on Friday morning. The SP doesn’t go that far. But the mother party is also making public its conflict with Mario Fehr. What happened?

Fall out the window

The background to this is an incident last Wednesday: two rejected asylum residents fell through a window in the former Erlenhof care center in the city of Zurich. As the canton police wrote on Friday, the two men are said to have jumped off the third floor alone. They were stationed in the building along with other rejected asylum seekers. The men were transferred there after the corona virus broke out at the Urdorf emergency shelter.

Canton Zurich police ruled out any outside influence in Wednesday’s incident. The two young men survived the fall: the 19-year-old is still currently in hospital. His 23-year-old colleague was released from the hospital and returned to the Erlenhof.

The Zurich Security Directorate, headed by Government Councilor Mario Fehr, responded to the incident with a controversial press release. In it, he wrote, among other things, that several of the rejected asylum seekers at the Erlenhof were “faking basic rules and protective measures”. Therefore, the security department sent several police officers to the Erlenhof.

It can’t be that people don’t adhere to the guidelines.

“It is important that everyone in Switzerland adhere to quarantine regulations,” said Daniel Winter, spokesman for the Directorate of Security, explaining the decision. It cannot be that people do not follow the guidelines and put themselves and others in danger or even infect bystanders. As soon as the quarantine ended, the residents would return to the underground accommodation in Urdorf.

SP does not ask for resignation

This reaction and also the incidents in Erlenhof and Urdorf cause outrage among the SP. As early as April, the party criticized the emergency shelter in Urdorf and demanded that the governing council close it, without success. “The weather situation in the bunkers is not enough to protect asylum seekers from a Covid infection,” Andreas Daurù, co-chair of the SP, said again on Friday.

It is not appropriate if the Security Directorate publishes a very grumpy press release.

Daurù does not demand the resignation of Mario Fehr. This is not convenient, so the co-chair of the SP. “At the same time, however, it is inappropriate if the security department publishes a very grumpy press release, the tone of which is sometimes on the edge.”

Therefore, the SP issued a press release. In it, the party demands that the governing council answer the books and questions about the facts. According to Mario Fehr tells SRF, he will comment on it at the next meeting of the Cantonal Council. He does not comment on the criticism of his party.
