Google makes Meet free to counter zoom

The overwhelming success of Zoom and Teams during the crash caused Google to offer its own Google Meet video conferencing solution for everyone for free. Until now, the solution was only accessible to companies and educational institutions through G Suite. To catch up with its competitors, the California IT giant introduced new features.

Inspired by zoom, the mosaic view allows viewing of up to 16 participants, previously there were four. Other functions use AI, such as automatic brightness adjustment in case of insufficient lighting or suppression of background noise, such as the barking of dogs or the sound of keystrokes. However, sessions are limited to 60 minutes, but only from September 30.

Google also focuses on IT security. This includes, for example, the option to allow or deny participation in a meeting and to reject anonymous users (who do not have a Google account). Conversations and recordings stored on Google Drive can also be encrypted.

Google Meet is expected to be gradually available to everyone with a Google email address in early May. The service can be used directly in a web browser or through a native application and will replace the Hangouts of the instant messaging and video conferencing platform. According to Forbes, hangouts are slated to end in June.

Zoom opted for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure services in late April. This is to deal with the massive increase in the number of users. Due to the crown crisis, they are now thirty times bigger than before, as you can read here.
