Maduro or Guaidó? A British court only gives the gold to the royal president. London should show its colors.

In the dispute over gold reserves worth around 1.5 billion Swiss francs, a British appeals court reversed the decision in favor of the Venezuelan opposition leader and self-proclaimed interim president Juan Guaidó.

The gold hoard remains locked in the Bank of England for the time being. Who is ultimately assigned, Maduro or Guaido’s interim government, depends on further clarification, as ordered by the court.

Cut: remove duplication

In practice, the judiciary is forcing the British government to stand up when it comes to Juan Guiadó and Nicolás Maduro and to draw diplomatic conclusions. The question is whether it is compatible that Great Britain, although it qualifies Guaidó as a legitimate interim president, has never broken diplomatic relations with the Maduro regime.

The court of appeal speaks of duplication. Only when they have been eliminated will it be possible to decide who owns the gold. More than 50 Western countries recognize Guaidó as interim president, but they still deal diplomatically with the Maduro regime. Duplication allows influencing the political development of Venezuela.

Maduro oder Guaidó

For example, the European Union, which asks Maduro to postpone the December parliamentary elections for later. Maduro is the one who controls almost all the institutions. Juan Guaidó, on the other hand, as transitory and parliamentary president, is a politician without real power.

At Maduro’s request, the Bank of England should have withdrawn the tonne of gold earlier this year. But his rival Juan Guaidó crossed and turned a commercial court in London. In July he was right and now he has lost before the court of appeal.
