Michelle Gisin took the podium for the first time at the World Cup even after a giant slalom. The Olympic combined champion is writing another chapter in the history of Swiss skiing.

Combination, descent, Super-G and slalom, in all these disciplines Michelle Gisin already has 3 first places at the highest level. Since the end of December 2019 and in 3rd place in the Lienz slalom, the only thing left for the Obwalden woman is the giant slalom as a discipline without a podium. She has already failed three times when trying to close this gap, as a very close fourth, with gaps of 2, 17 and 11 hundredths for the competitor positioned directly in front of her.

I couldn’t be happier to be able to drive like I do now. »

Reaching this podium in the giant slalom is one of his main goals for the winter, Gisin revealed a few weeks ago. Revealed because the 27-year-old had resolved before the season not to speak to the public and the media about her personal goals. This as a reaction to fall 2019, when Gisin hadn’t lagged behind with her big ambitions, but was then mostly disappointed with the (speed) season.

By failing to meet its own unchanged high standards, these times are over. Since the start of the season, the combined Olympic champion has been riding at the highest level in technical disciplines, climbing podium after podium with great regularity. It’s a lot of fun right now, says Gisin. “I couldn’t be happier that right now I can drive like I do.”

“Sonja Nef was my best role model”

Two and a half weeks after the first World Cup victory in the Semmering slalom, Gisin has set the next milestone in the giant slalom. Third place on the icy Kranjska Gora track, where the men’s World Cup usually takes place, is his “most emotional podium so far, because it’s the last thing I was missing,” the off-roader said in an interview with SRF. “When I was a child, Sonja Nef was also my best role model for me. That’s where my love for giant slalom comes from. “

When asked that she was the only Swiss woman alongside Vreni Schneider to have achieved World Cup podiums in five disciplines, Michelle Gisin was also moved: “For me, yes for all of us, Vreni is a popular hero with what achieves. Has. Now, having achieved something small, but something incredibly big to me, means a lot to me. It’s a perfect day. “

“Mind-blowing”: Michelle Gisin can hardly believe how fast she drives

Michelle Gisin got off to a great start to the World Cup winter. Before the two Super-Gs at St. Moritz, Engelberg’s wife spoke to Kiko and Manu about their ambitions, speed records and phantom racing.
