Germany tightens the screw in the fight against Corona: Merkel remains frustrated
Crown numbers in Germany are increasing at a rapid rate. Now, the curfew and stricter mask requirements must slow the course of the pandemic. But Chancellor Merkel is said to have shown frustration with the resolutions.
For hours, the prime ministers of the 16 federal states in Berlin, along with Chancellor Angela Merkel, have been discussing crown policy, which should finally look like a uniform in view of the ever-increasing crown number. Recently there was talk of the German patchwork quilt, crown chaos or Covid chaos because the politics of the crown had been handled differently from state to state.
That should finally improve after the Corona summit on Wednesday in Berlin. Late at night and after more than 7 hours of deliberation, Merkel’s first statements were leaked to the public: “What we are doing here is simply not enough,” the Chancellor is said to have said in frustration, according to “Bild “. “The results are not difficult enough for us to avoid disaster.”
After months, Merkel summoned the heads of government to a meeting in Berlin with a prescribed physical presence. With this, the head of government wanted to underline the urgency of the summit of the crisis of the crown. After several hours of discussion, the group agreed on the first decisions.

Curfew, tight mask requirements and contact restrictions
For example, in regions with particularly high levels of corona infections (Germany is based on the so-called incidence value of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days when assessing risk areas), the curfew time must be applied after 11 pm This means that shops and restaurants in most major cities will have to close one hour before midnight.
The group was also able to agree on a “supplemental mask requirement”, which comes into play when 35 corona cases are recorded per 100,000 inhabitants in the corresponding region. That could mean, for example, that in the future, a mask requirement will be introduced in particularly crowded places in cities.

Some of the resolutions recall blackout times in the spring, when the federal government issued contact restrictions. These are now coming into play again: private celebrations at Corona hotspots are now limited to a maximum of ten participants, a limit of 10 people also applies in public spaces; if necessary, only five people can gather in the public space if the number of infections is not lavatory. According to the “Bild”, Merkel is said to have prevailed, so even more stringent contact restrictions go into effect in the event of a further increase in crown numbers.
There is no consensus on the accommodation ban
However, the group did not reach a consensus on the question of whether people living in the German Crown hotspots can vacation in other federal states. Currently, most Germans cannot do this after most heads of government agreed to the so-called accommodation ban in Germany in the middle of last week.
The ban hit many city dwellers right at the start of the fall break. Suddenly, Berliners were no longer allowed to travel to the Baltic Sea, unless they had a negative corona test. Several prime ministers, including the head of government of Saxony, Michael Kretschmer (CDU), and the prime minister of the CDU of North Rhine-Westphalia, Armin Laschet, voiced harsh criticism of the accommodation ban. This causes unnecessary testing in already overloaded Corona test centers.
Furthermore, the experts pointed out that mobility within Germany is not necessarily a driver of the pandemic. Rather, people get infected at private celebrations in closed rooms. Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, on the other hand, insisted on travel restrictions. According to the “Bild”, the summit participants have postponed their decision – until November 8, when the fall holidays are over.
It is also likely that there will be changes in cross-border traffic from November 8. For example, anyone wishing to travel to Germany from the cantons of Geneva or Vaud, which are listed as risk areas on the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) list, must immediately be quarantined for 10 days. A crown test can be done after a minimum of five days; if negative, travelers are exempt from the quarantine obligation. A 14-day quarantine period applies for risk areas until November 8.
The coronavirus is spreading rapidly in Germany. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported more than 5,000 new infections in one day yesterday, more than since April. Chancellor Merkel warned a few weeks ago that the situation could spiral out of control by Christmas with more than 19,000 infections a day. It was said in the evening that Merkel is said to have temporarily lost patience with heads of government who had resisted the tightening. Everyone is looking for a little escape. “Then we will be back here in two weeks.” (aargauerzeitung.ch)
