In Germany, the government is cracking down and taking further action in the fight against the coronavirus. The existing blockade and the restrictions already in effect will last until January 31. This affects, for example, the closure of most shops, restaurants, theaters, museums and leisure facilities.
Germans can only meet one other person
The contact rules will be even stricter: in the future, private meetings will only be allowed with members of the household and with a maximum of one other person who does not live in the household. Until now, the rule was that a maximum of five people from up to two households were allowed to meet.
In addition, a so-called “crown line” will be introduced for areas with a particularly high number of cases. Accordingly, residents of counties with incidence values greater than 200 cannot move more than 15 kilometers from their own home in the future.
15 kilometers from home, no day trips
Exceptions should only be made for a good reason. This includes, for example, visits to the doctor. Day trips are “explicitly not a valid reason”. According to the German Robert Koch Institute, 67 districts currently exceed the threshold value that activates the “Crown belt”.
The closure of schools and nurseries will also last until the end of January. Merkel said after deliberations that the goal was still to reach an incidence of 7 days per 100,000 inhabitants under 50 years of age.
“Powerful measures”
This is becoming even more important due to the discovered mutation of the coronavirus, which is spreading faster. “That means we have to be especially careful here,” the chancellor said. Once again a “new situation” arises. Merkel admitted that the new measures were “drastic.”
The German chancellor also commented on vaccines. In the second quarter of this year, there will be a significantly higher number of vaccine doses “to the extent humanly possible.” However, there are no specific binding announcements on when Covid-19 vaccines can be expected nationwide at the latest.
New corona infections in Germany
German health authorities reported 11,897 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in one day. In addition, 944 new deaths were recorded in 24 hours, as announced by the RKI on Tuesday morning.
Interpretation of the data remains difficult because around Christmas and the turn of the year corona cases were registered and transmitted late. (SDA / euc)
