It’s a frontal attack on Roger Federer. Dirk Hordorff, the vice president of the German tennis association, accuses the Swiss of making the rules of tennis the way he likes them.
“Roger Federer can choose his place in the ranking even without playing”
On Facebook, Hordorff is upset about the current ATP ranking system. “Some of you have trouble understanding the ATP ranking system. But it is that simple. Roger Federer can choose his position in the ranking even without playing. By the way, Roger is a member of the players council. That makes him happy. “
So is Federer using his position on the players’ council to his advantage? Hordorff seems to believe that. Already in December he accused him of “modifying his own ranking.”
Federer benefits enormously
The problem: Due to the corona pandemic, not only tournaments from the last 52 weeks are included in the ranking, as usual, but also 2019 events in part. You cannot participate in tournaments.
Federer benefited from it during his long injury break. Many points from his victory at Miami 2019 and the Wimbledon final two years ago remain in the rankings, making him No. 6 in the world. Without these regulations, he would currently have 45 points since his comeback in Doha, nothing more. Now he would be in position 600 and then he would have to depend on a ranking protected by injury.
But he doesn’t just shoot Federer, he starts attacking from all sides. Rafael Nadal is also targeting the German for the same reason. The world’s number one Novak Djokovic is up front and he doesn’t care who is behind him and what the players council is doing. Andy Murray, who continues to test his hand with an artificial hip, only benefits from wild cards and doesn’t have to win at all.
“Everybody gives a shit about the others”
The new generation, however, is suffering from this. Alex Zverev (De) or Andrej Rublew (Russ), for example. “They are angry that they are winning, but not moving up the rankings,” Hordorff said. The other players are insecure and don’t know what to do. “But they don’t give a shit anyway.”
He is not the first to criticize the current ranking system. Zverev already commented on it. “The way the ranking works now, I don’t care anymore. It should be in the top 5 or 4 with a normal system. So it’s a bit absurd, “said the world’s number 7 (SME).
