The scene went around the world and sparked protests around the world. For eight minutes, Police Officer Derek Chauvin (44) pressed his knee on George Floyd’s neck († 46). Until he couldn’t breathe anymore. Now the 44-year-old is on the run again. The court had ordered a $ 1 million bond. One thing is clear: the ex-cop doesn’t want to be guilty of Floyd’s death. At the September hearing, Chauvin alleged that the African American died of a fentanyl overdose. A drug that is often used to relieve chronic pain.
Floyd’s death in Minnesota, recorded on multiple video recordings, sparked violent protests in the United States and other countries. A vendor had called the police on suspicion that Floyd had paid with a fake $ 20 bill. The videos show how Floyd acts confused during the arrest, speaks of claustrophobia and is not allowed to be put into a police car.
The process should take six weeks.
Chauvin was charged with murder and three other officers were charged with complicity. They requested that the case be terminated on the grounds that Floyd’s death was caused by exposure to medications and drugs. Attorneys for the Floyd family dismissed the account as false after the hearing. Attorney Tony Romanucci re-emphasized that he suffocated.
Even before the hearing, the defense lawyers had requested separate trials against the police, among other things so that they did not incriminate each other.
