The canton of Geneva has imposed a state of emergency due to the growing number of people infected with corona: almost all stores with non-essential items have to close.
In the canton of Geneva, the university hospital has sounded the alarm for the large number of patients with a crown. The government announced on Sunday that it would take comprehensive protective measures starting Monday night and declared a state of emergency. It is valid from 7 pm
At a press conference, the members of the Council of State justified the restrictions with the sharp increase in the number of new infections and the large number of hospitalizations. With the exception of Pierre Maudet, all Geneva State Councilors gathered for a press conference on Sunday afternoon to explain the measures. Maudet’s absence is explained by a crown case in the family.
Bars, restaurants and stores that do not sell groceries will be closed at the mini lockdown. On the other hand, kindergartens and schools remain open up to the secondary level. In non-compulsory schools, lessons are taught remotely. The new restrictions are limited to four weeks. They remain valid until November 29.
As the canton doctor Aglaé Tarin said, there are 474 patients with a crown at the Geneva University Hospital. 56 of them are in the intensive care unit. Such figures were not reached even at the peak of the pandemic in spring.
More than 1000 new infections
In the past few days, between 1,000 and 1,300 people have tested positive for the coronavirus every day. According to the university hospital, the situation is dramatic. The clinic fears that patients will have to be airlifted to other hospitals in the future. The day is also coming when patients of a certain age will have to be turned away. Therefore, the Council of State has decided to act. Even if the measures are difficult for the population, said the district president, Anne Emery-Torracinta (sp.).
Theaters, cinemas, gyms, swimming pools and ice rinks will also be closed. Hairdressers, beauty salons, games and erotica are also affected. The discos are already closed. In addition, gatherings of more than five people both indoors and outdoors are prohibited.
The new restrictions hit numerous companies in full force. Free-spirited CFO Nathalie Fontanet wants to do everything she can to help affected economic sectors. Compensation for replacement earnings should be activated again as in spring. Fontanet also called for more people to work from home.
A lock with numerous exceptions
Based on the experience with the spring closure, the Geneva government has made a number of exceptions. Pharmacies, drug stores, post offices, banks, libraries, and flower shops remain open. Visits to hospitals and nursing homes are also possible. Restaurants can sell through the alley and retail stores through “Click and Collect”. This means that customers can pick up orders online at the store. Voting will take place on November 29.
The canton of Jura already declared a cantonal state of emergency on Friday. As in Geneva, all bars, restaurants and public facilities such as museums and sports centers will be closed from Monday to November 15. As in the canton of Neuchâtel, gatherings of more than five people are prohibited. The canton of Friborg also declared the situation extraordinary and imposed a strict mask requirement on compulsory schools.
