Aargau’s governing council is disappointed that General Electric (GE) no longer wants to uphold the previously made guarantees to keep jobs in the canton. GE plans to stop production at Oberentfelden AG.
The governing council, together with federal councilor Guy Parmelin, head of the Federal Department of Economics, Education and Research (EAER), calls on GE management to refrain from moving the Oberentfelden site to France. The Aargau State Chancellery announced on Friday.
GE is expected to seriously seek solutions to maintain as many jobs as possible in the production companies in Switzerland or Aargau.
“We are disappointed and concerned that GE management no longer wants to keep the promises made regarding the location of Oberentfelden with regard to job retention,” government counselor Urs Hofmann (SP) is quoted in the press release. .
In May 2018, GE announced that it would move 500 jobs from Oberentfelden to Birr AG. In February 2019 it was reported that the Oberentfelden location was very well used and that a move to Birrfeld would therefore be avoided for the time being.
According to the governing council, it is incomprehensible from a business point of view that the Oberentfelden and Birr locations should be closed. Before the summer break, there had been a lot of work going into the move from Oberentfelden to Birr.

The governing council sees “serious reputational and credibility risks” for GE due to the guarantees given to date to maintain the Oberentfelden / Birr site.
The governing council is in close contact with Federal Councilor Parmelin in his efforts to maintain the GE Oberentfelden / Birr location and thus the jobs in Aargau.
