Whether it be Sion, Manchester City, St. Etiénne, Chievo Verona, Leicester, Udinese, Sporting, Freiburg, Rennes or at the end of Frankfurt, Gelson Fernandes spread his bones for numerous clubs and searched in almost every major European league.
The Swiss with roots in Cape Verde is now drawing a line in his career. As he and his current employer Eintracht Frankfurt announce on social media on Thursday, Gelson will end his career at the end of the season.
Unforgettable goal
The humorous bear has given up on Nati before. He is also considered a hero there. It was Gelson who shot us at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa for the much-celebrated 1-0 victory over the future world champion of Spain. The man was immortalized on June 16.
“I’ve always been honest”
Gelson says: “I always wanted to determine the time and circumstances by myself and I didn’t want to stop because there was no other way. I thought about it for a long time and I have to be honest with myself, my colleagues and the club. I was always honest about soccer.
The 33-year-old ran for a total of 10 clubs (see above), won the Cup and the DFB Cup once with Sion and Frankfurt and participated in three finals with Switzerland. In total, it reaches 518 clubs and 67 international matches. Imposing!
But Gelson is not done yet. In the Eintracht statement, he promises to hit everything in the final games with Frankfurt. Gelson recovered from a hip flexor injury on time and can look forward to the season’s final sprint, even if it will take place without an onlooker. (rab)
