Last April, Bernard Schuiteman was introduced as GC’s athletic director. Now the 47-year-old Dutchman is gone again.
“In recent months I have felt more and more that the role of sports director does not suit me,” Schuiteman is quoted in a statement from Hoppers. «My passion for football lies in other areas besides the position of sports manager. Therefore, this resignation was inevitable. I had a great time at Grasshopper Club Zurich and I am proud to have done my part to bring the GC back to normal, ”said Schuiteman of his time with the Challenge League leader.
As GC continues to write, the athletic director himself requested a separation on February 1. “Personal reasons must always be respected and therefore we do not want to put any obstacles in their way,” says Managing Director Shqiprim Berisha.
In the BLICK interview, Schuiteman talks in detail about the reasons for his surprising departure.
Bernard Schuiteman, what happened?
Nothing happened.
So why are you regressing in the middle of the season?
It’s about the whole package. And it’s also about personal components. I am a completely football crazy guy. At first I thought that the job as a sports director was my dream job. But what I like the most is a role in which 95 percent can only talk about football. At GC, however, this was only around 20 percent. As a sports director, it’s also a lot about bureaucracy, politics, and odds. He was too far from football. And I noticed that I am not so comfortable in the role of sports director.
What influence did your partner, who works as a teacher in Vienna, have?
We thought that the distance between Austria and Switzerland would be easier. I have a great partner. She didn’t tell me: come home now! But the private was also a small component.
Don’t you feel bad about leaving the club in the middle of the season?
For me it was important that in the end I was able to sign two youth players from the general standings as professionals. Y: The team is very stable, it remains. The club is in very good hands. I am convinced that GC is on the right track.
Does your surprising resignation have nothing to do with the transfer chaos surrounding compatriot Hicham Acheffay? The league first put him on the contingent list, now they have removed his name from the list (reported BLICK).
Not at all. This case is in the hands of our Secretary General Samuel Huber.
Will you return to work for Wolverhampton Wanderers immediately?
Now I am taking a break and will recharge the batteries. But nobody has to worry about me.
